Oya Mestre John Richards has, ‘experienced and survived…!’ two Brazilian carnival study tours in Salvador de Bahia in 2002 and 2003, where he played carnival with local band Kizumba and shot unique video footage of his experience (see below)
Ever since returning, John has wanted to strengthen the cultural exchange by widening the participation of local communities. To do this, Oya batucada is exploring how they can bring a group of disadvantaged young people and adults from Birmingham, to do workshops and perfomances in Brazil.
